Abidjan, the bustling metropolis of Ivory Coast, is growing at a rapid pace. Among the many infrastructure projects that are transforming the city’s mobility, the fifth Cocody Bridge is an emblematic achievement that marks a new stage in the urban landscape. It has been consolidated today as a reference work, representing a great achievement of the Abidjan urban development program.
The design and construction of the infrastructure features a remarkable design that revolves around the inverted Y-shaped pylon. This cable-stayed bridge combines cable-stayed and continuous spans, showcasing engineering excellence and artistic finesse.
The highlight of the bridge is the captivating inverted Y-shaped pylon, which stands at a height of 107.6m. Made of premium white concrete (grade C50/60), the pylon adds elegance to the overall structure. Each leg measures 5.3m in width across the bridge and 14.4m in length along its bottom. The upper mast spans 5m in width and reaches a height of 6m at its peak. To reinforce its structural integrity, the pylon is strengthened with 32 internal strength level Y1860S7 27T15S cables.
The cable-stayed span measures 200m in length, complementing the distinctiveness of the inverted Y-shaped pylon. Additionally, there are 8 non-cable-stayed spans with varying lengths, resulting in a total bridge length of 630m. The bridge’s deck is a combination of a robust steel box girder and a reinforced concrete deck slab, firmly anchored to the C9 abutment.
The deck features an open box girder with 4 webs and a constant height of 3m along the centerline. Divided into voussoirs, each element measures 15m in length and 28.7m in width, featuring a 1.5m wide gutter cornice on each side. High-quality S355 steel is utilized for the box girder, ensuring exceptional strength and durability.
The typical element’s top plate has a thickness of 25mm, while the web thickness is 20mm. The lower plate, 20mm thick and 10.5m wide, incorporates a 500mm opening for the trough, which is 10mm thick.
Completing the deck structure are precast reinforced concrete slabs with a thickness of 25cm and a concrete grade of C35/45. These slabs are meticulously placed on top of the metal structure and securely bolted. The connection between the concrete slab and the metal structure is reinforced using stud connectors.
To ensure stability, the project employs stays consisting of T15S strands with a cross-sectional area of 150mm2 and an impressive elastic modulus of 195,000 MPa, delivering optimal performance. The Cocody Bridge Project masterfully blends engineering expertise with artistic finesse, resulting in an iconic landmark that captivates both functionality and beauty.
